3.7  Conditioning   of   shapes,   plates,   and

bars.

3.7.1 Structural-size   shapes may  be condiD tioned  by the manufacturer   for the removal of  ib.j.urious   surface   imperfections   or   deD pressions  on  their  surfaces  by  grinding,  or chipping  and  grinding,  provided  the  area  is well ground  and  the  depression  does not exD tend  below  the  rolled  sur.face of  the  shape more than the following:

%2  inch  in material  less than  '% inch in thickness,  or

�8 inch  in material  :Sh inch and  over in thickness.

Surface  imperfections  which  are  greater   in depth  than  the  limits  shown  above, may  be removed  by  chipping  or  grinding  and  then depositing  weld metal,  subject  to the followD ing limiting  conditions:

(a)  Th\  total  area  of  the  chipped  or ground        surface    of   any    piece prior to welding  shall not exceed

2  percent   of ·the  total   surface

area of that  piece.

(b)   After removal of any imperfections preparatory  to welding, the thick-

ness  of the material  at any  locaD tion must  not be reduced by more than  20  percent   of  the  nominal thickness  of the section, nor  can this  reduction   in thiclmess  ever

exceed  1h inch  in  depth,  at  the

location  of the  imperfection.

(c)  The toes of angles, beams, channels, and  zees and  the  stems  and  toes of  tees  may   be  conditioned  by grinding  or  chipping  and  weldD ing,        provided    the    maximum depth                of   depression    prior   to welding  does not  exceed 112 inch.

3.7.2  Imperfections that  do  not  affect  the utility  of the  plates  are  not  commonly conD sidered  injurious   defects.  Plates   are  comD monly  conditioned  by  the  producer  for  the removal  of .surface imperfections  or  depresD sions  on  either  surface   by  grinding,   proD vided  the   ground   area   is  well  flared  and grinding  does not reduce the thickness of the as-rolled  plate  by the following values :

(a)   More than  7 percent  of the nominal thickness  for  plates  sped.fied  to weight  per square  foQt, but in no case more  than  % inch.
